Mob Wives: Drita Connects With MHP

Drita is ready to take on another project!

I recently read that Drita is starting a charity for single parents, called, "Single But Not Alone," to help those struggling on a daily basis. Drita states that while she has been a single parent for many years, she has always had the support of her family to rely on, while many others do not. For this reason she wants to be able to lend a helping hand to them through her new charity. I am all for charitable causes to help others in need, and this idea has plenty of merit and potential.
Which brings me to my next question, how did Drita connect with Maximum Human Performance (MHP)? It sounds to me like she has become their spokesperson more so, than an association for her charity. Maybe both?  They did give her a check for five thousand dollars for her new cause, and Drita has probably already given them ten times that amount in publicity for their new product. I certainly have never heard of these products before yesterday. Being the skeptic that I am, I started doing a little research this morning. I was wondering whether these products have been tested for safety before being marketed. You know that many dietary supplements do not have to pass any FDA requirements before hitting the shelves? So it wasn’t easy to search for information, especially since MHP has inundated the internet with all kinds of advertising and sales pitches and promotion for their products.
A little background on MHP. MHP was founded in 1997 by professional body builder, Gerard Dente and his friend Dr. Vincent Giampapa. Their products are geared for muscle building, weight gain and a variety of other issues, as far as I can determine. I have always felt that “natural” is better, it’s just common sense to me. Let’s take one line of products for example, the protein drinks/supplements. A website I found, among many, states, “Take Home Message: A chicken breast, three 8-oz glasses of milk, and three eggs are inexpensive sources of high quality protein, whereas protein powders are expensive sources of uncertain quality, and potentially contaminated, protein. It is both better and cheaper to eat real foods.” Natural foods have to beat powders, right? But, let me also say, some people may swear by these products and I haven’t tested them myself. I also do not know which consumer’s rave reviews are real and which may be planted by the company.
The specific product Drita is promoting is the 8-Hour Alert energy supplement. Part of the profits from this one product will be donated to her charity, no amount is mentioned. This “energy” supplement contains, amongst other things, the equivalent amount of caffeine that could be obtained by drinking a 12 ounce cup of coffee, says MHP. You can get a bottle of 14 tablets, enough for 14 days, for about $12 (much cheaper on Amazon).  Hard as I searched, I can’t seem to find out exactly how much caffeine is in the product, but No Doz has 100 mg and No Doz “extra strength,” has 200 mg. No Doz clearly states the amount of caffeine, whereas 8 Hour Alert advertisements mention no amount. This concerns me for consumers trying to make an educated decision as to whether or not to use the product.
Basically, I am not going to buy any of MHP’s products, but I still did the research. If you are planning to purchase any over-the-counter items that are not FDA tested or regulated; that do not specify the quantity of a major ingredient for you to see; and that you can get from natural sources and not by artificial means…then at least do me a favor and do the research yourself first.
Of course, I wish Drita every success starting up her foundation for single parents. It’s always a great thing when celebrities use their fame to help others and direct attention and awareness to worthy causes. And now, thanks to 8-Hour Alert, she has more energy to devote to her cause.
